How to Make Ketchup – Lefty’s Recipe
Posted in Canning Process by: adminFebruary 13th, 2010
How to make Ketchup (Catsup) from scratch the old fashioned way. This makes about 30 – 8 oz bottles of ketchup in a 3-4 hour process. It is a sweet ketchup with a pronounced spice flavor to it. Grandpa prefabricated this for about 45 years. His mother prefabricated it to spice up the B-Grade food they ate in the Depression. Treat this like you would any other canning project. It’s a hobby to bring back the old times. Enjoy the process as much as the end result.

Nice to see your …
Nice to see your family traditions continuing on to the little ones. I wanted to learn how to make “catsup” and that’s what I searched for, so I’m glad you included that old fashioned word. Can’t wait to make my own this summer!

I don’t ever …
I don’t ever remember grandpa boiling the bottles. Since the ketchup goes in boling hot, maybe that’s why he never did. And I’ve never seen a well-capped bottle go bad within a year. As a matter of fact, I think the shelf life is more like 2-3 years, but it’s never been around that long to find out. I’ll update here, if I find differently. Thanks for the comment!

Excellent!
So you don’t boil the bottles after bottling? In 100 bottles, roughly how many turn bad after one year?
I am new to this but I wonder why people boil the bottles at the end. Thanks.
