The Amish and their culture, lifestyle and beliefs is something which is very powerful in a way I have yet to fully grasp. I sense something very deep and powerful in their way of life but haven’t been healthy to touch or sense it properly. On the surface my Old Order Amish friend and family, seem idyllic, visually so. One of the young boys looks exactly like the old Huck Sawyer image so favourite in movies and books. Barefoot, blue pants held up by small suspenders, blue shirt with a straw hat with curly locks hanging out the sides, it is a image which is hard to accept as real. Yet it is. It’s a way of life. No electricity, canning garden goods, berries, milking the cow by hand, horses and buggies. It’s a step back to another era. A experience usually unavailable.

Luckily my friend, age 34, is coming around, or me to him? We’ve had a few laughs at my questions as to what I perceive they should wear or do (based upon stereotypes of the Amish) and what they actually do. This is one of those rare life experiences where, even though I am working with my Amish friend in slowly exploring an array of furniture designs (I bring the old growth lumber, he crafts the furniture) and his particular skills, in other ways, its been a excuse (without trying), a goal, to interact in one of the most intriguing individualized experiences I’ve ever had.

PEACEFUL AMISH HORSE needs a new home. You can see it on the photos, brownish red in color, age 11, and slightly arthritic. In the Amish community the horse provides regular transportation by either pulling a buggy or as teamed up, in pairs, to pull a freight auto or field equipment (team of four horses). The brownish red horse would make a good, regular horse, for any non Amish. It’s just that it has trouble doing a up to 20-24 mile, round trip, regular range pulling a buggy as it used to.
